A Bit of a Rant…

January 17, 2012

We’re a busy family.  We’re not altogether different than the families of anyone reading this…but that being said, we’re just a busy family.  And my guess is that you can relate.  Whether you are a college student, or a single, maybe you’re recently married, or in that phase with a few kids…you might be a Duggar for all I know.  But whatever you are…however many of “you” there are…I’m betting your schedule is packed pretty tight.

Take a moment and read through Deuteronomy 7…the whole chapter…all 26 verses.

Now if you took the time to read through that passage, you’re rightfully asking why I started this whole deal talking about how busy our schedules are.  It’s a fair question.  One of the things that my wife and I have learned over the last few years is what it means to be intentional.  We’ve learned what it means to make a decision and see to it that we follow through.  And in the midst of our lives…in the throes of our day to day comings and goings…we’ve learned that if we aren’t intentional about our time…it will disappear really quickly…devoured by ball fields, gymnastics floors, and all of the other business of life.

So we have to set apart time.  It’s just a fact.  We have to set apart the time for the things we love.  That might be family…that might be church…that might be friends…or date nights…or going to a football game.  It really doesn’t matter what it is.  If we love something…we have to set apart the time…we have to make a choice…to do it.

This whole chapter of Deuteronomy is a reminder that this is exactly what our God has done for us.  In verse 6 it says, “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God.  The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”  It’s saying that if you are one of God’s chosen people…it’s because He chose you.  Does that sound redundant?  It ought to.  For some reason, often times, we read a text like that and walk away feeling good about the decision we made.  The only reality that we can truly be left with after hearing that is that we should feel incredibly humbled by the decision…the choice…that God made.

I want to rant for just a second.  I genuinely try not to be that guy too often…but here it is.  I’m sick of hearing the excuses that believers use for not setting apart the time to join their fellow believers in corporate worship of our God.  Because here’s the thing; we do it for everything else that we love.  Oh, we set apart time to watch the game.  We set apart time to watch movies.  We set apart time to hang with our girlfriends and boyfriends.  We set apart time to sit in the woods waiting for an in-season animal to walk out.  We do that.  And listen, I’ll even go so far as to say that we set apart…we literally consecrate time…to do absolutely nothing.

The story of Deuteronomy 7 is that God set you apart.  God chose you as His “treasured possession”…but we sure do love to sleep (sorry…rant’s over).  Ephesians 1:4 says that He “chose us in him before the foundation of the world.”  And just like Israel, He didn’t choose you because you were smart, or pretty, or powerful…He chose you because He loves you.  He chose you because He wants you.  Oh, that we would set apart the time to honor Him for the grace and mercy He has shown by choosing us…to be His people.  Selah
